Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the New Year ushers in, it's crucial to keep abreast of important tax deadlines. January 2026 is pivotal for individual tax obligations concerning estimated payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Let’s navigate through these deadlines to ensure you stay compliant and informed.

January 2 - Secure Your Tax Appointment

The onset of January marks the commencement of tax season. If you haven't scheduled your appointment for tax preparation, now's the time. Slots fill up quickly, so act promptly to ensure your place.Image 2

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline

For employees working for tips, it's mandatory to report any tips received exceeding $20 during December to your employer by January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personally signed statement including your name, address, Social Security number, and your employer’s details, specifying the total tips for the month.Image 3

Your employer will utilize this information to withhold FICA and income taxes from your regular wages. Should these wages not cover the withholding, the uncollected amounts will be reflected in box 8 of your W-2. It's imperative to address any outstanding withholding on your annual tax return.

January 15 - Estimated Tax Payment Due

The deadline for the fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year is January 15. Failure to meet this deadline means you must file your 2025 tax return and settle all dues by February 2, 2026, to circumvent a potential estimated tax penalty.

Considerations for Weekends & Holidays:

If a deadline lands on a weekend or a legal holiday, it’s automatically pushed to the next business day that isn’t itself a holiday.Image 1

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

In areas designated as disaster zones, filing deadlines may be extended. For confirmation on disaster status and specific extensions, check FEMA's disaster declarations and the IRS's disaster relief resources.
