Illinois Doctor Faces Prison for $1.6M Tax Evasion

An Illinois doctor from Lake Forest has been sentenced to 34 months in prison following the revelation of a complex scheme involving health care fraud, concealing assets, and tax evasion. From 2011 to 2017, Dr. Krishnaswami Sriram orchestrated an intricate plan that defrauded the U.S. government of approximately $1.6 million in lost tax revenue (source).

The Department of Justice details how Dr. Sriram engaged in deceptive practices to evade taxes, including transferring the title of two rental properties to his children without their knowledge while continuing to collect rental income. Such actions are classic examples of disguising ownership and income to avoid tax obligations.

Further revelations show that he funneled approximately $700,000 from U.S. bank accounts to accounts in India, adding yet another layer of obscurity to his financial profile.

When Dr. Sriram submitted an "offer-in-compromise" to the IRS, a program that allows taxpayers to settle their tax liabilities for less than the owed amount, he intentionally omitted crucial information, such as certain U.S. investment accounts, offshore assets in India, and ownership of the said rental properties. These omissions falsely depicted his financial status as untenable and unable to support tax payments.

Dr. Sriram’s misconduct resulted in significant losses for the IRS, underlining the critical importance of accuracy and honesty in financial disclosures, even as part of negotiations for debt relief programs. The nearly three-year prison sentence reflects both the gravity of his offenses and the judicial system's strong stance against fraudulent activities, especially those that breach the trust inherent in medical and financial professions.Image 3

This case exemplifies the resolve of the IRS and its Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) division in uncovering and prosecuting fraud schemes that exploit legal loopholes to hide tax liabilities.

The federal government’s stringent enforcement against health care and tax fraud continues on a broader scale, as seen in various cases from multi-million dollar Medicare scams to fraudulent refund schemes (source). These efforts highlight the seriousness of adhering to tax code regulations and the health care system's integrity.

Dr. Krishnaswami Sriram's sentence is a caution to all professionals that abuse of the tax and medical systems is strictly dealt with and that the consequences of such actions are severe.
