Essential December 2025 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the year draws to a close, it's crucial to highlight key tax-related tasks for December, encompassing year-end planning, tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and final deductible payments for 2025.

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategy

December is the month to make strategic tax moves that could impact your 2025 fiscal outcome. If you've experienced significant shifts in income, marital or dependent status, or property sales this year, schedule a tax planning consultation promptly.

December 10 - Declaration of Tips to Employers

Employees receiving over $20 in tips during November must submit IRS Form 4070 to their employer by December 10. This requirement ensures proper withholding of FICA and income taxes from your wages. Insufficient wages to cover these withholdings will result in the employer reporting the shortfall in box 8 of your yearly W-2, necessitating payment during tax filing. Image 1

December 31 - Mandatory IRA Withdrawals

Those born before January 1, 1952, must execute withdrawals from Traditional IRA Accounts by year-end to evade penalties. Individuals turning 73 in 2025, whose birth date is between January 1 and December 31, can defer their initial withdrawal until April 1, 2026. Ensure arrangements for withdrawal are made early, especially if your institution closes over the New Year.

December 31 - Final Opportunity for 2025 Deductible Payments

This marks the deadline for payments on deductible expenses applicable for your 2025 return. Note that IRA, SEP, and Keogh contributions retain flexibility for payments post-December 31, 2025.

December 31 - A Consideration of Timing

Actions intended for New Year’s Eve that require time to process should be advanced, as some financial institutions could be closed on December 31st.

Weekends & Holidays Policy

If a deadline collides with a weekend or legal holiday, the due date naturally shifts to the next business day.
